A team made up of Mortenson and Bartlett Cocke General Contractors has been selected to build the San Antonio Spurs’ new basketball arena in downtown San Antonio, Texas, a project valued at $1.3 billion. Funding combines public and private sources: Bexar County will contribute $311 million, the City of San Antonio $489 million, and the NBA franchise will cover the remainder of the budget along with any cost overruns that arise during construction.
The new arena will anchor a broader sports and entertainment district that includes an expansion of the convention center, a new convention hotel, a land bridge over Interstate 37, upgrades to the Alamodome, and the conversion of the historic John Wood courthouse into a live entertainment venue. The design and management team includes Creative Artists Agency Icon as project manager, Pape-Dawson as civil engineer, and Overland International as the architecture firm.
Mortenson and CAA Icon have previously partnered on other major sports venues, including Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas ($1.9 billion, 2019) and Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle ($1.15 billion, 2021), underscoring their experience with projects of this scale. A Mortenson vice president noted that the partnership combines the firm’s national experience with Bartlett Cocke’s local knowledge, a firm that has worked on numerous landmark San Antonio projects over the years.
